Carbohydrate-Electrolyte Drink
A carbohydrate-electrolyte drink is a water-based beverage containing carbohydrates together with dissolved electrolytes. These drinks are commonly formulated for use during or after exercise, when fluid, carbohydrate, and electrolytes may need to be replaced together. Sodium is usually the principal added electrolyte, although other electrolytes such as potassium may also be present .1,2
The carbohydrate component commonly includes sugars such as glucose or sucrose, or glucose polymers such as maltodextrin. Carbohydrate provides dietary energy, while sodium contributes to fluid and electrolyte balance. In the small intestine, transport processes involving sodium and glucose can also promote water absorption .1,2
Carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks do not have one universal composition. Their carbohydrate concentration, sodium content, and osmolality can vary according to their intended purpose. Specific compositional ranges have been defined for carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions in connection with European Union health claims concerning water absorption and endurance exercise .1
Carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks are distinct from oral rehydration solutions (ORS), although both contain carbohydrate and electrolytes. Many sports-oriented carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks contain more carbohydrate and less sodium than standard ORS formulations. ORS are specifically formulated for rehydration associated with fluid and electrolyte losses such as those caused by diarrhea, whereas sports drinks are generally formulated around hydration and carbohydrate provision in an exercise context .2
