Cardiorespiratory endurance is the capacity to sustain rhythmic, large-muscle exercise through the integrated transport and use of oxygen. It is a component of physical fitness and is closely related to concepts such as cardiorespiratory fitness, aerobic fitness, and aerobic capacity. It reflects the combined ability of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and muscular systems to support prolonged aerobic exercise .1,2
Cardiorespiratory endurance depends on several systems working together. The lungs enable oxygen uptake, the cardiovascular system transports oxygenated blood to active muscles, and the muscles extract and use that oxygen in aerobic metabolism to support repeated contractions. Because these processes are linked, cardiorespiratory endurance reflects more than the function of the heart or lungs alone .1,3
A common laboratory measure of cardiorespiratory fitness is maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max), which represents the highest rate of oxygen uptake reached during progressively intense exercise. Tests that measure or estimate cardiorespiratory fitness therefore commonly involve sustained activity using large muscle groups, such as running or cycling .1,2
Cardiorespiratory endurance should not be confused with performance in a particular endurance event. Although greater aerobic capacity can support prolonged exercise, actual performance also depends on factors such as the demands of the activity and the ability to sustain a particular fraction of maximal capacity. Cardiorespiratory endurance refers to the underlying physiological capacity rather than performance in any single task or sport .1,2
