Circuit training is an exercise-training method in which several different exercises or stations are performed sequentially, usually with relatively short rest periods between them. After completing the stations, the sequence may be repeated for additional circuits. The exercises, loads, repetitions, work periods, and rest intervals can be adjusted substantially, so circuit training describes the organization of a workout rather than one specific exercise intensity or load .1,2,3

Resistance circuit training uses resistance exercises as the stations, often with short transitions between exercises. This arrangement increases training density and can maintain substantial cardiovascular and metabolic demand while different muscle groups are trained in sequence .1,3

The adaptations produced by circuit training depend on its design. Resistance-based circuits can improve muscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness, and systematic reviews have also reported changes in body composition. Variables such as exercise selection, resistance, number of repetitions, number of exercises, and recovery periods influence the resulting training stimulus .1,2

Circuit training is distinct from a superset. A superset generally pairs two exercises performed consecutively before a longer rest period, whereas a circuit typically involves a sequence of several exercises or stations. Both are methods of organizing exercises within a training session and can use relatively short recovery periods compared with more traditional set structures .3
