Drop Set
A drop set is a resistance-training technique in which an exercise is typically performed to, or close to, muscular failure, the load is then reduced, and additional repetitions are performed immediately with little or no rest. The load can be reduced once or several times within the same extended set. Drop sets are also called descending sets or breakdown sets .1,2
A typical drop set begins with a relatively heavy load and continues until the prescribed stopping point. The resistance is then lowered, often by roughly 20 to 25 percent in studied protocols, allowing additional repetitions despite fatigue from the preceding effort. Repeating this process increases the amount of work performed over a short period and therefore increases training density .1,2
Compared with traditional sets separated by longer rest periods, drop sets can produce greater acute fatigue, higher ratings of perceived exertion, and higher blood lactate concentrations. They can also reduce the time required to complete a resistance-training session. Current evidence indicates that drop-set and traditional training can produce broadly similar long-term gains in muscle hypertrophy and strength, rather than drop sets consistently producing superior adaptations .1,2
A drop set is distinct from a rest-pause set. In a drop set, additional repetitions are made possible primarily by reducing the resistance, whereas rest-pause training generally keeps the load unchanged and inserts brief recovery periods before further repetitions. It also differs from a superset, which involves performing two different exercises consecutively rather than progressively reducing the load of the same exercise .1
