Endurance Exercise
Endurance exercise is physical activity performed continuously or repeatedly over a relatively prolonged period, requiring the body to sustain muscular work over time. Activities such as distance running, cycling, swimming, and prolonged walking are common examples. Endurance performance depends substantially on the ability of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems to deliver oxygen and of skeletal muscle to use it for energy production .1,2
During endurance exercise, contracting muscles continuously require adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is regenerated through both aerobic and anaerobic metabolic pathways, but aerobic metabolism typically provides a major share of the energy during prolonged exercise. Carbohydrates and fats are the principal fuels, with their relative contributions changing according to factors such as exercise intensity, duration, nutritional state, and training status .1,2
Endurance exercise is not synonymous with purely aerobic exercise. Even during activities dominated by aerobic metabolism, anaerobic pathways can contribute substantially when intensity increases, such as during accelerations or steep climbs. What primarily characterizes endurance exercise is the need to sustain exercise over time rather than exclusive reliance on one energy system .1,2
Endurance exercise is also distinct from endurance training. An individual session can be described as endurance exercise, whereas endurance training involves repeated endurance exercise over time and can produce adaptations that improve the capacity for sustained work .1,2
