PNF stretching, short for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching, is a group of stretching techniques that combines stretching with voluntary muscle contractions. Rather than simply holding a muscle in a stretched position, PNF methods use sequences of contraction and stretching or relaxation to increase joint range of motion. They are used in both rehabilitation and athletic settings .1,2

Common forms include hold-relax and contract-relax stretching. In a hold-relax technique, the target muscle is placed in a stretched position and then contracted isometrically, meaning it produces force without substantial joint movement. After the contraction stops, the muscle is stretched again. Some PNF techniques also include contraction of the opposing, or antagonist, muscle to move the joint farther into the available range .1

PNF stretching can increase range of motion both immediately after a session and with repeated practice. Historically, this effect was often explained by reflex mechanisms called autogenic and reciprocal inhibition. However, these mechanisms do not fully explain the observed changes. Increased tolerance to stretch and changes in the mechanical behavior of the muscle-tendon unit are among the factors considered relevant .1,2

PNF stretching is distinct from conventional static stretching. Static stretching usually involves holding a relatively fixed stretched position without an intentional contraction sequence, whereas PNF specifically incorporates voluntary muscular contractions as part of the stretching procedure. Although PNF can improve flexibility, systematic reviews do not establish that it is consistently superior to other stretching methods for increasing range of motion .2,3
