Submaximal Exercise Test

A submaximal exercise test measures responses below maximal capacity, with results that depend on the workload and protocol used.

A submaximal exercise test evaluates physiological responses to exercise performed below a person’s maximal exercise capacity. Rather than increasing workload until maximal exertion, the protocol uses a lower controlled intensity that can be maintained for a defined period or across planned stages .1

During submaximal exercise, researchers may measure cardiopulmonary and metabolic responses such as heart rate, ventilation, oxygen consumption, and carbon dioxide production. When a fixed submaximal workload is maintained, these responses typically rise from resting levels and then approach a plateau .1

A submaximal test is distinct from a maximal exercise test, in which workload is progressively increased to characterize responses at or near the participant’s highest exercise capacity. The meaning of a submaximal result therefore depends on the exercise mode, workload, duration, and protocol used .1
