The Z-disc, also called the Z-line or Z-band, is a protein-rich structure that marks the boundary between neighboring sarcomeres, the repeating contractile units of striated skeletal and cardiac muscle. Each sarcomere extends from one Z-disc to the next. In microscopic views of muscle, Z-discs appear as dense transverse lines and contribute to the regular striped pattern characteristic of striated muscle .1,2

The Z-disc anchors the ends of the actin-containing thin filaments. Thin filaments from two adjacent sarcomeres enter the same Z-disc from opposite directions, where they are cross-linked largely by the protein α-actinin. This arrangement helps maintain the orderly alignment and opposite orientation of actin filaments within successive sarcomeres .1

The Z-disc also participates in transmitting mechanical force between successive sarcomeres. It is not simply an attachment point for actin: it contains numerous structural and regulatory proteins, including connections with titin, a large elastic protein that spans part of the sarcomere. These interactions help integrate the Z-disc into the broader structural and mechanical organization of the muscle cell .1

The Z-disc is distinct from the M-line, another structural region of the sarcomere. The Z-disc lies at each sarcomere boundary and anchors thin filaments, whereas the M-line is located near the sarcomere center and helps organize the thick, myosin-containing filaments .1,2
