The hypothalamus is a small region of the diencephalon located below the thalamus and closely associated with the third ventricle and pituitary gland. It acts as an important integration center between the nervous and endocrine systems, receiving information about the body's internal state and coordinating physiological and behavioral responses that help maintain homeostasis .1

The hypothalamus consists of multiple interconnected groups of neurons called nuclei rather than functioning as a single uniform structure. These neural circuits participate in the regulation of body temperature, thirst and water balance, food intake and energy balance, sleep and circadian rhythms, reproduction, stress responses, and autonomic nervous system activity. Different hypothalamic nuclei have partly distinct but overlapping roles in these processes .1

A major function of the hypothalamus is control of the pituitary gland. Hypothalamic neurons release releasing and inhibiting hormones into a specialized portal circulation that regulates hormone secretion from the anterior pituitary. Other hypothalamic neurons synthesize vasopressin and oxytocin, which travel along their axons to the posterior pituitary, where they are stored and released into the bloodstream .1

The hypothalamus and pituitary are closely connected but are not the same structure. The hypothalamus is part of the brain and integrates neural, hormonal, metabolic, and sensory information, whereas the pituitary is an endocrine gland whose hormone secretion is extensively regulated by hypothalamic signals. Together, they form a major interface through which the brain coordinates endocrine function with changing physiological needs .1
