Indispensable Amino Acids
Indispensable amino acids are amino acids that humans cannot synthesize in amounts sufficient to meet physiological requirements and therefore must obtain from the diet. They are also commonly called essential amino acids. In humans, the nine indispensable amino acids are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine .1,2
Like other amino acids, indispensable amino acids can be incorporated into proteins and participate in other metabolic pathways. What makes them nutritionally indispensable is not that they have uniquely important functions, but that endogenous synthesis cannot provide enough of them to meet the body's needs. Dietary protein is digested into amino acids that contribute to the body's amino acid pool, from which new proteins and other nitrogen-containing compounds can be synthesized .1
Indispensable amino acids are distinguished from dispensable amino acids, which the body can normally synthesize in sufficient quantities. A third category, conditionally indispensable amino acids, includes amino acids that can usually be synthesized adequately but may require a dietary source under certain physiological or pathological conditions when endogenous production cannot meet metabolic demand .1,2
The classification is therefore based on the body's capacity to supply an amino acid relative to its needs, rather than on whether the amino acid is biologically necessary. Both indispensable and dispensable amino acids participate in normal protein synthesis and metabolism, but only the indispensable group must ordinarily be supplied through the diet .1,2
