Periodization
Periodization is the planned organization and variation of training over time to promote specific adaptations, manage fatigue, and prepare for particular performance goals. Rather than keeping training variables constant, a periodized program deliberately changes factors such as training volume, intensity, exercise selection, and training emphasis according to a structured plan .1,2
Periodized training is commonly organized into cycles of different lengths. A macrocycle represents a relatively long overall training period, while mesocycles are shorter blocks within it and microcycles are still shorter units, often organized around days or weeks of training. The exact duration of these cycles is not fixed and depends on the athlete, sport, goals, and competition schedule .1
Different periodization models arrange training variables in different ways. Traditional or linear periodization generally shifts training emphasis progressively across successive phases, often from relatively higher-volume training toward greater intensity. Undulating periodization varies volume and intensity more frequently, for example between training days or weeks. Other approaches, including block periodization, concentrate particular training goals within dedicated periods .1,2
Periodization is not simply any change in a training program. Its defining feature is that variation is planned and organized over time in relation to training objectives. It is also distinct from progression, which refers to systematically increasing or modifying the training stimulus as adaptation occurs. Periodization can incorporate progression, recovery periods, and changes in training emphasis within a broader training structure. Evidence from resistance-training studies indicates that periodization can influence strength development, but no single model is universally optimal for every outcome or population .1,2
