Progressive Overload

Progressive overload is the principle of gradually increasing or adjusting the training stimulus as the body adapts to exercise. In resistance training, a workload that initially challenges a muscle can become less demanding as strength and exercise capacity improve. Progressively modifying the stimulus helps maintain an appropriate training challenge as these adaptations occur .1,2

Progressive overload does not simply mean adding more weight to an exercise. The resistance used is one component of the training stimulus, but progression can also involve increasing the amount of work performed. For example, performing more repetitions or sets can increase training volume. In resistance-training research, training volume is often quantified using combinations of sets, repetitions, and load .1,2

The principle is closely related to overload, but the terms emphasize different aspects of training. Overload refers to providing a stimulus that challenges the body's current capacity, whereas progressive overload describes how that stimulus is adjusted over time as capacity changes. Progression does not have to occur at every workout, follow a fixed rate, or involve the same training variable each time .1

Progressive overload is not itself a specific training program. How the training stimulus is progressed depends on the adaptation being targeted and the variables used in the program. Larger increases in training volume also do not necessarily produce proportionally larger increases in muscle growth, so progressive overload should not be interpreted as a rule that more training always produces more adaptation .1,2
