A number on a heart-rate monitor can change quickly during a workout, but knowing what that number means takes more than simply deciding whether it looks high or low. The same heart rate can represent a different challenge for different people or even for the same person under different conditions. Used with the right context, however, heart rate can provide useful information about how the body is responding during aerobic exercise.
Heart rate is widely used as an indirect indicator of aerobic exercise intensity. During dynamic aerobic exercise, it generally rises as workload and oxygen demand increase, although the relationship varies between individuals and across conditions. Factors such as heat, prolonged exercise, fitness status, and medications that affect heart rate can shift that relationship .1,2
A target heart-rate zone places individual readings within a prescribed range that corresponds to the intended exercise intensity. When that zone has been appropriately prescribed for the individual, staying within it during aerobic exercise can help indicate whether the activity is occurring at the intended intensity. During prolonged exercise, especially in the heat, cardiovascular drift can cause heart rate to rise even when the external workload remains unchanged .1,2
Heart rate can also be considered alongside other signs of exercise intensity rather than interpreted in isolation. Perceived exertion, changes in breathing, and how comfortably a person can speak during exercise can provide additional context. Looking at several cues together can give a broader picture of how demanding the activity feels .1
The most useful heart-rate number is not necessarily the highest or lowest one, but the one that can be interpreted in relation to the person and the workout being performed. Over time, familiar heart-rate responses can help someone recognize how their body behaves at different exercise demands and notice when that response changes. In that sense, heart rate works best as one source of information within the larger picture of how an exercise session feels and progresses.
