Keeping track of training seems simple until the question becomes, “How much training was actually done?” A single number can be useful, but what that number represents depends on the activity and the way the workload is being described. This is why training volume is better approached as a measurement concept rather than as one calculation that applies everywhere.
Training volume describes the amount of training performed over a defined period. It can be considered for an individual exercise or session, then aggregated across days, weeks, or longer periods. The way it is quantified depends on the exercise mode, which is why there is no single volume calculation that works equally well for every kind of training. Volume also represents only one aspect of training and should not be treated as interchangeable with every measure of internal or external training load .1
For aerobic physical activity, volume can be expressed as kilocalories per week, MET-minutes per week, or MET-hours per week. MET-minute and MET-hour measures combine activity intensity with duration, allowing weekly aerobic volume to reflect both how demanding an activity is and how long it is performed. Kilocalorie-based volume also reflects intensity and duration, but the estimate additionally depends on individual characteristics such as body mass and on the method used to estimate energy cost. These measures therefore describe aerobic volume in related but not identical ways .2
For resistance training, one volume-load convention is to multiply sets by repetitions by load. This calculation provides a compact way to summarize how much loaded repetition work has been performed for a particular exercise or across a period of training. Because it is designed around sets, repetitions, and resistance, it looks fundamentally different from the energy- and MET-based measures commonly used to describe aerobic activity .3
Consider a biceps-curl session consisting of three sets of 10 repetitions using a total load of 50 pounds. Under the sets × repetitions × load convention, the calculation is 3 × 10 × 50, producing 1,500 pounds of volume-load for that session. If the same biceps-curl session is performed twice during a week, the weekly biceps-curl volume-load is 3,000 pounds. Those numbers are specifically volume-load metrics. They are not literal measurements of mechanical work or energy expenditure, and they do not capture characteristics such as movement distance, velocity, or effort. They summarize one defined aspect of the resistance training performed .3
The value of a volume measure comes from knowing what it represents and using it consistently. Two numbers may both be called “training volume” while describing very different features of exercise, so they should not automatically be compared as though they were equivalent. A useful measurement fits the activity and makes changes in training easier to track and interpret over time. In that sense, the meaning behind the number matters just as much as the number itself.
