A superset, a circuit, and a drop set can all make a resistance workout look different, but the names describe different ways of organizing the work. One pairs exercises, another moves through a sequence, and the third reduces the load so the same exercise can continue.
A superset pairs two exercises performed in sequence with little or no rest between them. This arrangement can improve the time efficiency of a resistance-training session .1
Circuit training uses a sequence of exercises performed with short or minimal rest between them. That broader sequence distinguishes it from the two-exercise structure of a superset. A conventional drop set keeps the same exercise but reduces the load after an initial bout of repetitions, allowing the exercise to continue with little or no additional rest. The initial and subsequent bouts are often performed to or near muscular failure, although specific drop-set protocols vary. Closely related drop-set variations exist, so this is best understood as the conventional format rather than the only possible definition. Reducing the load allows additional repetitions to be performed after fatigue has accumulated, extending the work performed within the exercise without increasing the external load .4
The practical distinction comes down to what changes inside the workout structure: supersets pair two exercises, circuits move through a broader sequence, and conventional drop sets lower the load so the same fatigued exercise can continue.
