Resistance-training advice often turns useful cues into universal rules. But sound technique depends on the exercise being performed and the person performing it. A trunk, knee, or shoulder position that works well in one movement may need to change when the biomechanical demands change.
Trunk control illustrates the point. During integrated movements, trunk musculature can help coordinate motion and transmit forces between body segments. The amount of trunk stiffness, motion, and muscular activation required, however, depends on the exercise and technique being used. There is therefore no single bracing or “core” strategy that should automatically be applied to every lift .1,2
Knee-to-foot alignment is similarly conditional. During squat- and lunge-type exercises, keeping knee motion generally aligned with the direction of the foot can be useful when excessive inward knee displacement is present. In people who demonstrate excessive dynamic knee valgus during squat-type tasks, movement coaching or feedback can sometimes reduce that pattern, although the most effective strategy varies among individuals and tasks. Normal knee motion is not identical for everyone: stance width, foot angle, anatomy, and the specific task all influence the relationship between the knee and foot .3,4
Shoulder-blade positioning also changes with the exercise. Scapular retraction, sometimes accompanied by depression, can be appropriate in certain resistance movements. During overhead arm elevation, however, the scapula normally needs to move, including substantial upward rotation and posterior tilt. Fixed retraction and depression are therefore inappropriate as universal cues. The useful scapular strategy depends on the direction of movement, load, technique, and the individual performing the exercise .5
Good lifting technique is better understood as a movement solution than as a fixed posture. A useful cue helps a person meet the demands of a particular exercise; it does not become a universal rule simply because it works well in one setting. Technique therefore has to be interpreted in relation to the movement being performed and the individual performing it.
